When Japan raised visa fees for most nationalities significantly in mid-2026 (to roughly ₹8,760 for a single-entry visa), Indian travellers were specifically exempted. Two Ways to Apply

Paper visa, or the new eVisa

Paper Visa

The long-standing route — apply through a VFS Global centre (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Kochi, or Goa). Several centres have moved to appointment-only booking, so reserve your slot ahead of time. Processing typically takes 5–10 working days — we recommend applying 3–4 weeks before travel.

eVisa

Japan's new eVisa for Indian tourists is a fully online, single-entry visa for stays up to 90 days — no passport stamping, no in-person VFS visit, delivered as a digital notice. It's not available for multiple-entry, business, or study purposes, but for a standard family holiday it's the simpler route.

Can we get a multiple-entry visa?

Usually only if you've visited Japan before, or visited a G7 country recently. First-time travellers typically start with a single-entry visa.

Do we need to submit our itinerary ourselves?

How far in advance should we apply?

3–4 weeks before travel is a safe window, longer during peak season (cherry blossom months in particular see higher application volumes).
