Planning Guide

What a Japan Trip Actually Costs

Real, current figures for every category — flights, visa, stay, trains, food — so you're planning from facts, not guesswork.

Per Person, One-Time Costs

The costs that don't change with your itinerary

These are roughly fixed regardless of how long you stay or where you go within Japan. Figures current as of 2026.

Category
Typical Cost
Return flight (India – Japan)Economy, booked 2–3 months ahead. Sakura-season or last-minute fares run higher.
₹55,000 – ₹85,000
Tourist visaIndian nationals pay a preferential rate — far below most other nationalities.
₹500 + VFS service fee
Travel insuranceRecommended for every international trip, not Japan-specific.
₹1,500 – ₹3,500
7-day JR PassOnly relevant if you're using public rail rather than a private vehicle.
¥50,000 (≈₹27,000)
₹500

India gets a genuine advantage here. When Japan raised visa fees for most nationalities as much as 5x in mid-2026, Indian citizens were specifically exempted and continue paying just ₹500 for single or multiple-entry visas — versus roughly ₹8,760 for most other countries. One of the more overlooked reasons this is a good year to go.

Quick Questions

Frequently asked

Is a JR Pass worth it if we're already booking a private vehicle?

Usually not — if your trip is privately guided end to end, the vehicle replaces the need for a rail pass on most routes. We only recommend one if part of your trip is genuinely better done by train, like the Shinkansen legs.

Does the cost change a lot for vegetarian or Jain travellers?

Barely, once it's planned in advance. It affects which restaurants we book, not the overall budget.

Why not just publish one flat package price?

Because it would be misleading. Season, hotel category, group size, and pace change the number by a lot — a flat number on a website is usually the "starting from" figure that never matches what you actually pay. We'd rather give you a real, itemised number after a short conversation.

What's not included in these figures?

Shopping, optional paid experiences (like a private tea ceremony upgrade), and any domestic flights within Japan for longer multi-region trips — we'll flag these clearly if your itinerary needs them.
